Scholarship
Held in honor of a special brother, Jim Robertson enrolled at CSULB in 1993 and quickly found friendship and good times with fellow Sigma Pi Brothers. Steve Lindholm, Jim’s big brother in the fraternity, renamed the tournament in his honor during the year of his passing.
The Jim Robertson Memorial Golf Classic & Scholarship Drive, held the first Friday of every October, usually brings out at least a hundred Sigma Pi Alumni, actives and friends and family. “Each year we come together to strengthen the bonds of Brotherhood and revisit old friends and fond memories,” says John Olsen, past fraternity president and the current organizer. “The Jim Robertson Memorial Golf Classic & Scholarship Drive benefits the Jim Robertson Memorial Scholarship Fund held at the CSULB Foundation and continues to grow each year.”
So far, the event has raised over $100,000 and paid out $70,000 in scholarships for deserving actives who completed the application and made the final cut based on GPA, community service, leadership and merit. The event continues to evolve from 30 players at Bixby Golf Course back in the 1980’s to a 100+ participant multi-event program, the brainchild of a few graduating actives in the late 1980’s. To celebrate the 61th anniversary of the CSULB campus, as well as its status as one of 120 institutions to be named Best In the West by the Princeton Review, participants can enjoy a VIP tour, which includes the famous Pyramid and the Nugget, a local campus hangout, and home to great bands like Sublime. Also planned Thursday evening is a happy hour at the famous Joe Jost’s or Second Street in Long Beach.
For a reduced price this year of $100, golfers enjoy two meals, green fees, cart fee, range balls, beverages, awards, auction and more. Those who don’t play golf have three other events to attend which includes the campus tour, alumni happy hour, or dineing amonst friends. This year, the golf event will again be held at Meadowlark Golf Course in Huntington Beach, Calif.
